Welcome! Willkommen! to the Athenæum, built between 1893 and 1898 as Das Deutsche Haus (The German House), a German-American Turnverein, clubhouse & community center.
This great Indianapolis landmark is listed three times in the National Register of Historic Places. It is significant not only to local and national German-American heritage, but to the areas of culture, education, decorative arts and sports generally.
The Athenæum Foundation is a not-for-profit organization, formed in 1991, dedicated to restoring this architectural treasure. The Foundation's mission is to revitalize the Athenæum so that it may serve the Indianapolis community as a center for the arts, entertainment, and physical fitness, while preserving and maintaining its unique historical character. The Athenæum Foundation sponsors a number of family and heritage related events and programs throughout the calendar year.
